1. Film producer Miranda Bailey was hearing a lot about this whole “green” movement taking place in Hollywood. So on the production of her latest film, The River Why, she decided to test the waters and see what it actually takes to make a set (with countless bottles of water, pollution and expansive rubbish) envionmentally-friendly.  She documented the experiment in the form of Greenlit which premiered here at SXSW yesterday.
In short, the experiment didn’t go all that well.
Frustrations boiled over, the crew rebelled and refillable water bottles were thrown.
However, it did strike me that many of the obstacles that the crew experienced could be addressed on commercial shoots.  Shoot lengths are drastically shorter, making the hassle of refillable bottles and composting much more tolerable.  Often, locations are far more accessible, allowing recycling to be carried out much more efficiently, better access to resources and so forth.   Couple that with the PR benefits for clients, agencies and production companies and the sheer number of shoots each year and it starts to look like a much more viable, attractive and important option…
